Lin Mo Niang (960-987) was respectfully called Mazu. A native of Meizhou Island, Putian County, Fujian Province. Born on March 23rd of the first year of Jianlong (960) during the reign of Emperor Taizu of the Song Dynasty. My father's given name was Yuan, and his courtesy name was Weiyi. He held the position of a chief inspector and was kind and benevolent. In his hometown, he was called a good man. Mother Wang gave birth to one son and six daughters, among whom Mo Niang was the youngest. When it was alive, a red glow surrounded the room and a strange fragrance filled the air. Because the first half of her life is full and she does not hear the cry of a mother, the day is silent. He was exceptionally intelligent at a young age and could recite what he read at a glance. At the age of sixteen, one can understand changes and skillfully apply the mysteries. It can ward off evil spirits, cure diseases, save the world and the living, and control the wind and rain. Often in the tumultuous sea, rescue boats is hard to come by. At the request of the county magistrate, he climbed the altar to pray for rain and was blessed with sweet rain. He has repeatedly shown supernatural powers to save the world, and people regard him as a god. In the fourth year of the Yongxi reign of the Song Dynasty (987), Mo Niang, at the age of 28, still unmarried, saved the world from peril. In the early summer of that year, father and elder brother set out on a voyage together. Suddenly, the boat was capsized by a storm. Lin Mo Niang went to sea to save her elder brother, but her father was killed. He searched for his father's body all over the sea and returned with it after three days. People at that time were moved by her filial piety and called her a filial daughter. On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month of the same year, he passed away while sitting upright on the mountain peak. The local people, moved by his kindness, built a temple to worship his physical body. To this day, the statue of his physical body still remains intact in the ancestral temple of Meizhou, Putian. After ascending to immortality, he often reveals his divine power and his incense offerings never cease. She also appeared on the sea to save people and was revered as a sacred deity by sailors from all over the country, respectfully called Mazu. All emperors of past dynasties bestowed titles upon them. Emperor Gaozong of the Southern Song Dynasty bestowed upon her the title of "Lady Zhaoying of Linghui". Emperor Shizu of the Yuan Dynasty bestowed upon her the title of "Heavenly Empress of the Ming Dynasty", Emperor Chengzu of the Ming Dynasty promoted her to the title of "Heavenly Empress of the Red Benevolence and Universal Salvation", Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty further bestowed upon her the title of "Heavenly Mother", and during the reign of Emperor Qianlong, it was included in the sacrificial rites by imperial decree. Today, temples of the Tianhou Palace can be found everywhere. Be worshipped by the world.
