Wei Boyang was from Shangyu, Kuaiji (now Shangyu County, Zhejiang Province) during the Eastern Han Dynasty. Some say his name is Ao, his pseudonym is Boyang, and he is also known as Yunyazi. Peng Xiao's "Preface to the True Meaning of the Book of Changes" records that he was born into a prominent family and was fond of practicing alchemy and Taoist arts. He wrote "Zhouyi Can Tongqi" and "Wuxiang Lei", blending the studies of "Yi" and the theories of Huang and Laozi. With the practice of furnace fire smelting, he expounded the theory of alchemy and became the foundational work of early Taoist alchemy. Later, he was hailed as the "King of Alchemy Classics" and had a significant influence on Neo-Confucianism in the Song Dynasty.
